Caffeine Intake During Pregnancy

There is a common opinion that pregnant women should avoid consuming large quantities of caffeine because of the response it elicits from the body. So, it is best to cut down your caffeine intake or simply switch to decaffeinated drinks instead for enjoying a healthy and safe pregnancy.

Caffeine intake during pregnancy has been associated with numerous adverse consequences, some of which could prove dangerous including abortion and reduced growth of fetus. Various government health agencies have stepped forward in issuing health warnings to pregnant women advising them to avoid or at least limit the consumption of caffeine and caffeine related products to avoid any conflicting situation.

If you thought caffeine is only found in coffee, you are wrong. The fact is that apart from coffee, caffeine is present in tea, chocolate, cola and a host of over-the-counter medications used for getting relief from common cold and headaches. So, you better beware of what you consume, especially during pregnancy to avoid any risk to yourself and your baby.

Being a stimulant, caffeine increases your blood pressure as well as your heart rate, both of which might spell danger for you during pregnancy. Moreover, its regular consumption might produce side effects such as fatigue, headaches, and disturbed sleep cycle.

Apart from being a great stimulant, caffeine is a diuretic as well. And consuming caffeine during pregnancy may cause decline in fluid levels in your body resulting in dehydration due to increased frequency of urination.

Certain essential nutrients including iron and calcium are considered indispensable during pregnancy. However, excessive consumption of caffeine can disrupt the absorption of these nutrients in a pregnant womanÀâ„s body due to the elements of caffeinated tea or coffee. Yet another reason to restrict the caffeine intake to moderate levels during pregnancy.

Caffeine intake by pregnant moms may lead to increased fetal heartbeat. However, it does not have any long term effect on the development of the baby although it might affect their sleep cycle.

Experts and studies have stated that a moderate caffeine intake during pregnancy has little effect on the risk of miscarriage or stillbirth. However, there may be an increase in miscarriages and preterm labor among pregnant women who consume more than 300 mg of caffeine every day.

So, during pregnancy, the less caffeine you consume, the better it is. It would be best if you practice total caffeine abstinence. However, if you must get your fix, then moderation is the keyword. It is advisable to consult your doctor before deciding about the exact levels of caffeine to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
