It’s great you exercise, exercising often and getting regular adequate sleep reduces stress and anxiety. Sex (orgasm) is also a great stress reliever.
Eat healthy, (lots of fruits, veggies, nuts and whole grains) eat foods low in sugar, fat, and carbs. Limit eating foods with preservatives, additives, artificial sweeteners, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, salt and caffeine, these and a Vitamin B complex deficiency can cause emotional disturbances in the brain…eat fish, fish oil/omega3 is a natural antidepressant and enhances brain function (even a tuna fish sandwich 3X a week or fish oil supplements) liver, pork, chicken and potatoes are also high in vitamin B1-12.
Stress can cause a hormone imbalance…adrenal glands, which regulate the hormones in your body do a good job under normal circumstances, but too much stress lowers the amount of progesterone your body produces causing an hormonal imbalance which creates emotional instability and adrenal fatigue, exercise and eating foods made from soy naturally produce progesterone in the body. (if soy foods are not available everday eat a Soy Joy fruit bar)
Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated, helping to digest food and flush waste faster ridding the body of toxins.
Get outside in the sunshine for 15 – 20 mins. everyday, your body will produce Vitamin D to enhance it’s ability to absorb nutrition and your brain releases endorphins to naturally lift your mood.
Don’t isolate yourself, talking, hanging out and having fun with friends makes us happy.
To help you relax and reduce stress always listen to your favorite music, start a journal and write down your feelings and if you enjoy art express yourself through drawing or painting.
These things will lessen sadness and help you to have more interest and motivation, not to mention a noticeable improvement in your skin and hair.
If you decide to seek professional help and are prescribed antidepressants here’s a site with great info…one side effect they don’t mention is long term use causes liver damage and neurological disorders.http://www.youngcarers.net.au/Carers/con…

For mild depression, several simple dietary changes can be beneficial:
Essential fatty acids are a good place to start. Eat plenty of fresh fish, avocado, and flax.
Keep your system flushed of toxins by drinking plenty of water.
Make sure your B vitamin intake is adequate. B vitamins are great for mood!
Avoid too much sugar, caffiene, and alcohol. All of these things can effect your mood negatively, especially if you are intolerant to them.
Address the possibility of food allergies, and if any intolerances are identified avoid those foods. Food intolerance/allergy can cause a host of symptoms, including feelings of depression. Many food additives (MSG is the biggest offender) can also cause problems. Try to eat as many unprocessed, raw foods as you can.
Rotate your foods; eat a variety of foods to make sure your nutritional needs are being met and avoid eating the same thing day after day. Eating the same thing all the time not only limits your nutritional intake, it can cause food intolerances (or be a sign of them if you are having cravings).
    Aside from diet:
Make sure you are getting enough sleep. Fatigue can so easily sap your emotional reserves.
Don’t discount the idea of therapy. While medication may not be what you are looking for, a good counselor can help a mildly depressed person by addressing emotional issues and teaching stress management techniques. If you feel overwhelmed, try seeking out a counselor for a bit of crisis intervention.
If you feel you have a chronic condition and are wary of Rx medication for mental health, you might look into St. John’s Wort, SAMe, or 5HTP. All three are serotonergic (improve circulating serotonin levels) and have been clinically proven to help with depression in mild to moderate form. Just be careful; while supplements may not have the same side effect risks as prescription medication, they can still interact with drugs and/or other supplements. Consult a naturopathic doctor or a psychiatrist who is an advocate of natural medicine if you intend to use these for a mental health condition.
Whatever you do, I would advise against seeking mental health care from your general health care practicioner or family doctor. While these professionals are highly competent in treating all sorts of ailments, mental health, especially where prescription medication is involved, is best left to a mental health professional.
    Good luck!

My MD psychiatrist also leans toward holistic medicine. He tells me what to buy for healing, or anything wrong with the body.
I asked him why he keeps prescribing regular meds to me. His answer:
“The holistic remedies work for the physical body, but do little for the mind.”
You may just need to see a shrink. Most of the meds are not a problem.

I think medication is the best way. I tried all the natural remedies and I really did not get better until I tried the medication. Try this web site. http://www.lexapro.com/
