It has been so long since the kids brought home something like that…..
I would recommend a pet formula milk replacement. Kitten supliment. It will have better vitamins and be easier to digest than cows milk. Otherwise keep feeding on a frequent regular basis. Contact a local wildlife rescue group for more advice. They will be able to help… Good Luck!!
Well I’m sure the mother rabbit was just devastated (and in pain from swollen teats) to find her babies gone when she returned to the nest. That’s so sad.
Anyway, baby rabbits generally only feed from their mother once a day. Her milk is so highly concentrated that she does not have to return to the nest or even stay with her young all day if she doesn’t just want to. I know it sounds weird, but I have been raising rabbits for quite some time and have found it to be the case even in domestic rabbits.
The baby should not be able to urinate by himself and if he is it’s probably because he’s about to explode. You should feed him with the eyedropper, very VERY carefully and at his rate, not yours. If you feed too much at once he will drown in the milk. I have yet to find a nipple that will accommodate a baby rabbit, but we did find some that were supposedly for rabbits at the co-op and I made due until I could find another nursing mother to put the baby with. It was virtually impossible to encourage the baby to drink.
While the baby is nursing, however, the mother rabbit will clean its hind parts, making him use the potty. I recommend you do the same thing. That might also encourage the baby to eat.
Other than that, I’d say take the little fella to the local humane society or veterinarian for help. We have a lot of rabbits here. Too bad you’re not closer because I actually have a nursing mother right now that wouldn’t know the difference. That’s the thing about rabbits, they can’t count. If it smells like their kid, they’ll take it and feed it.
Oh, another thing, if you did happen to find a cat that was nursing, you could let the baby nurse off the cat. Of course, the cat might object, but crazier things have happened. They do really want to do it on their own (the baby) without having a bottle shoved at their face. Be very careful how full they get too because their little innards are not like ours. Chinese buffet for rabbits has not been invented yet. There are reasons the mother rabbit leaves them. They will eat until they founder otherwise.
Good luck!
The house rabbit society has information on its web site. See the link below.
Bring it to your local wildlife rehabilitation center! Don’t try to raise it by yourself!!! If you do, it won’t have as much of a chance to survive. You can call your vet to get the number of a local center.
Also, don’t feed it any vegetables or fruits, because feeding a rabbit veggies or fruit before it is 6 months old can get them very sick, and they might even die!
Good luck!
Feed it,
nurture it,
pray for it,
love it,
pet it,
clean its cage,
give it water,
keep it warm,
care for it,
treat it as best you can.
GOD BLESS!
You should stop feeding the bunny now and find a wildlife rescue center near you! If you must feed the bunny, that is until you can get to the rescue center start with pedialyte (once in rehabbers hands they will use goats milk)!!!!!And only feed the bunny if he is warm. Never feed babies when they are cold! If you dont have a center near you find a Cottontail rehabber in your state by searching the web!!!Try e-mailing wildlife rehabbers in other states if you can’t find a rehabber in your state.
go to the pet store and look in the baby milk replacement aisle and check out the books you would care for it just like any baby animal they have bottles and just about everything.
i have got some little new born baby rabbits there mother past away when it was giving birth we have to give it milk and make its bed at night it is a nightmare but at lest it is fun and there alive
me and my freind Elijah have 3 baby rabbits and we been able eep them aline for almost a week cuz the construckion on my street killed their mom and we have tried to feed them milk, water, carrots, lettice, weeds, grass/hay, and leaves. so ur basic food for a rabbit.
I need to know what to feed the baby. I keep it with me 24/7 inside a shoe box under a face rag and am feeding it baby formula for now. I have 5 rabbits, 2 are crippled, but the mothers took care of the babies although I was around when the newborns were here.
